The rapper in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM with DJ Adviser shared his success story and how Tonga and Strawberry Ginger brought him into the limelight.
Known in real life as Darryl Paa Kwesi Bannerman-Martin aka Joey B recalled how he wanted EL to jump on the song [Strawberry Ginger] he recorded.
“At that time EL was at his peak and I was learning from him gradually until when I recorded strawberry Ginger, which EL produced the song and took money… but I [JoeyB] needed his voice on the song so I had to beg him after he played the beat for me,” he said.
He continued that, EL was on a couch taking ice cream and I pleaded that he should put his voice on the song [Starwberry Ginger] so he [EL] asked me [Joey B] to turn on the gadgets in the studio and he dashed into the recording booth and sung”.
“But I [Joey B] wasn’t happy with his lyrics on Strawberry Ginger so I told him: EL paaaa and he replied What? since then we shot video and the song was everywhere” he added.
When asked how Tonga also became his biggest hit? he replied: that song I had to beat a guy who used to insult me via social media.
“So I searched for this guy and I disciplined him very well, but this guy was very funny on social media so I derived the word TONGA from the guy when I was using the water closet” he asserted.
“… Back then Guru’s Alkaeda song was doing great… so I asked DJ Breezy to play me a beat similar to Guru’s Alkaeda song… then I sent it to Sarkodie and he replied with fire emojis and he [Sarkodie] poured his verse on the song,” he said.
